Saint Ser. This hermit, who came from Lyon, led a frugal life of contemplation and prayer in Sainte-Victoire. The name that has come down to us, Ser, comes from the Latin servus, meaning servant (of God). Saint Ser's reputation for holiness attracted many visitors. This displeased Euric, the Visigothic ruler of Provence. The king decided to have the hermit killed in 484. Servus had his ears cut off before being beheaded. A small chapel was built near the cave where Saint Ser lived. Damaged during the great fire of Sainte-Victoire in August 1989, it has since been restored. Located in the commune of Puyloubier, it is a respected place of pilgrimage in Provence (every Whit Monday), particularly for people suffering from ear ailments…
