A major figure in the Gospels, Saint John the Baptist is regarded as the forerunner of Christ, the one who announced His coming and prepared the way for Him. Living in the wilderness, he called people to repentance and baptized them in the waters of the River Jordan. It was John who baptized Jesus, the defining episode from which he takes the name “the Baptist.”
Traditionally depicted in simple clothing, with an attitude both humble and resolute, he is often accompanied by a lamb, symbolizing Christ, whom he proclaimed as “the Lamb of God.”
